Van McKinney is April's Citizen of the Month

April Citizen of the Month

Mayor Steve Little selected former WBRM Reporter Van McKinney as Citizen of the Month for the month of April. 

Mayor Little stated that he had chosen Mr. McKinney, because of his lifelong career in radio. He stated that Mr. McKinney’s voice was one of the most recognizable voices in McDowell County.

Mayor Little stated that Van and former radio personality Sam Paul Combs were people he would never forget. He stated that their coverage of sports and community events kept citizens in touch with what was happening in their town. 

Mayor Little stated that Mr. McKinney had been the voice of McDowell High School Sports for more than 38 years. He stated that the live coverage he provided during games helped connect citizens to the sports that the loved. 

Mayor Little commended Mr. McKinney for working with MHS Coach Richard Laney to ensure fair and even coverage of both men’s and women’s sports. He then shared a brief summary of Mr. McKinney’s career that included not only live broadcasts of sporting events, but also hosting a midday call-in show and producing morning and midday news segments. 

Council Member then shared their fond memories of working with Mr. McKinney. 

Council Member Ramsey stated that he had known Mr. McKinney since his time working for the McDowell Sheriff’s Department. He said that Mr. McKinney was always a pleasure to work with and be around.

Council Member Martin stated that he had actually been Mr. McKinney’s shop teacher in middle school. He said he was proud of the man Mr. McKinney had become.

Mayor Pro Tem Ayers stated that Mr. McKinney was a staple in the community. He commended him for his exceptional coverage of local news. 

Council Member Harkey thanked Mr. McKinney for being so dedicated to student athletics. She stated that he had covered so many pivotal events in McDowell High School history. 

Audience members then shared their kind words with Mr. McKinney. Many of those present had worked with Mr. McKinney at WBRM at one point or another.

Mr. McKinney thanked Council Members and those present for their kind words. He said that he treasured their friendship and had enjoyed each and every moment working with those present.
