The Sanitation Division consists of the Sanitation Superintendent and seven employees, and provides several programs that ensure a clean and healthful environment for our City. The division is responsible for weekly garbage collection at residential properties, for street trash pick-up, for collection of recyclables, and for pick-up of garbage containers at commercial buildings. Items picked up by the Sanitation Division are taken to the McDowell County Landfill for disposal. The commercial recycling program involves the placement of containers at various business locations within the City for the recycling of corrugated cardboard, aluminum and junk mail and is performed by a private contactor.
In 2010-11, the Sanitation Division collected:
- 1,654.07 tons of commercial garbage,
- 1,779.94 tons of residential garbage,
- 419.15 tons of residential and commercial recyclables,
- 265.15 tons of household street trash,
- 606.25 tons of yard waste and brush and,
- 133.43 tons of leaves.
